Some time ago there was suggestion that we introduce additional certificates issued for girls, for less number of problems than current 145. I understand the motivation - there are less women in IT industry (at least working as programmers) - and it is the same in our site. Particularly there are only few women among recipients of certificates.

Though our certificates are more "a kind of joke" for me, some people regard them quite seriously, so I want to be sure the idea is not too controversial / offensive.

So please vote in THIS FORM. You will need login with google (to prevent duplicate responses) - but if you have not google account or don't want to use it - you may put your opinion below in comments.

I'll put any serious questions/comments received through form in the comments to this topic with my answers. I'll also try to post stats (if there are more than few responses).

If the community feeling is positive, we shall add such certificates soon.

THANKS

Certificates are going to be titled "Fanatic Girl Coder" as they are going to be awarded for reaching rank of Fanatic (85 problems). Of course fellows of other genders are not restricted from requesting such certificate, but this won't be of much sense as it is inscribed for girl. Below is one of the possible pictures for such certificates.

UPD We've got one important comment which probably means I need to clarify things. Author is unknown to me as the form doesn't collect email addresses etc:

Women shouldn't be held to a lower standard when their abilities are equal, and opportunity, not the outcome, should be distributed equally. Yes, there are less women in the I.T. industry, but that's because women tend to choose careers that deal with people and not things...

I agree with both thoughts, namely, that "women shouldn't be held to a lower standard" and that disbalance is caused by reasons not related to skills (I even believe it is rather due to historical causes).

However, please note:

  • our certificates are not "standards" - they bring no "real" profit and were invented to help people get motivated, they are not officially recognized by any institution;
  • and by additional certificates for women we intend just to increase motivation among certain group of users, nothing more;
  • as these are additional and optional, female user still needs to solve the same 145 problems to get our general, main certificate;
  • male users are not prohibited from receiving these "girl's certificates", it just don't make much sense for them and supposedly don't affect their motivation.
