Alternative to Google Custom Search for site

A week ago I've tried to add Google Custom Search to the site - the small box in the header, on the right - to be able to find old tasks, forum and wiki pages easier.

However soon I found a couple of bad things:

  • it often showed enormous amount of ads on the results page;
  • it could not find many pages at all - e.g. travelling salesman did not appear in results (though it could be seen if found directly fromg Google).

I like google, but this was quite discouraging.

I read about their API but found it is only free for 100 requests per day. Inconvenient limitation since people can use the same google anyway...

I've turned to similar Bing Service - but they also tell about limitation of 5000 requests per month - almost the same as Google.

Suddenly I thought about our national search service Yandex - I rarely use it since it is specially tuned for Russian-language resources. However I've found that CodeAbbey is indexed by it well enough already, and what is more:

  • it has similar search service for sites - though you may need to switch the language at the bottom of the page to English;
  • they have no limitations on amount of requests;
  • they do not show ads;
  • it has better tunable search box (I had hard time changing google button style) and do not require showing their logo (which would be misleading due to cyrillic symbols) in search box.

Yesterday CodeAbbey have switched to use Yandex Search and it looks far more promising.

Please feel free to report if you see any problems with it (or unwanted behavior, ads again etc.)

Hi Rodion, Could you fix the Clock on the menu bar? I'm not in the GMT Timezone. Could you make it Timezone aware? Frankly, I don't think it's needed.

None is in GMT! I think no country uses GMT! :)

The purpose of this clock is to have reference for all other timestamps on site (like time of the forum posts, user's last visits) etc.

I hope to remove this clock when I can make all these timestamps "timezone-aware"...
