A general forum is pretty cool, but I'm guessing it's better if we don't discuss solved problems here (so as to not give too many hints for people who wish to solve the problems by themselves first...)

Well... I haven't think of it - some popular resources I know have open discussions like this and it works somehow... :)

Though now I see the wisdom of your idea. The easiest way I see now is to allow the person who starts a new topic to specify the id of the problem which should be solved by users who want to read (or write to) this topic. Does it sound close to what your suggestion?

I think that he thinks about a hidden subforum like in Project Euler. Only the followers that solved the problem x can read and post in the x-related thread. It might be a cool way to explain one’s solutions.

Well... the approach I have in mind is similar with a few exceptions:

  • topics and posts could not be read / written by users who did not solve the problem - but lists of these topics are visible to anyone (I do not think reading the titles will do any harm - and they'll get "Forbidden" if try to follow the link anyway);
  • more than one topic could be created for any problem eventually - this have some advantages and disadvantages...

Yeah, I think that would work.

I hope this should work now.

I'll add new topic to explain bit more details...
